Bob Davis-Historic Specialist Specializing in the homes of the Cahaba Homestead Village
Historic District as listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. National Park Service.
The Cahaba Project was built by the U.S. Government during the 1930's in the depths of the Great Depression
with FDR New Deal stimulus money. It is one of nearly 100 New Deal communities built across the country.
It is one of the largest and is the most unique of them all. These communities were built for low to moderate
income families. Researchers in the 1940's noted that "Cahaba Homesteads is recognized and acclaimed
as one of the most attractive residential developments for people of modest incomes that has been developed
anywhere in this country."
This idyllic close-knit community through generations has nurtured many families and children who have
made their mark on the world in the fields of: medicine, art, music, commerce, education, politics, sports,
and the military.
